This course is designed for strong hikers and novice scramblers who want to learn the skills required for climbing moderate & difficult scrambles in the Canadian Rockies! There will be a maximum of just 4 participants in the group, so the instruction will be tailored to best meet everyones needs & a challenging ascent can be done!

Meeting Spot & Time: Canmore, 8:00am on day 1.

Agenda
Small group sizes allow us to customize the instruction to meet the needs of all participants, but this sample outline can give you an idea of what to expect:
Day 1 - A full day of skills on a rocky ridge near Canmore! The emphasis will be on safe & efficient travel on steep terrain and some of the skills covered will include:
- Security on exposed rock scrambling
- Security on moderate snow & ice slopes
- Basic ropework for scrambling terrain
- Descending steep terrain with & without a rope
- Route finding & navigation
- Avoiding avalanche terrain
- Dealing with loose rock
- and much more!
Day 2 - On the second day you will put your new skills to work on an ascent of a challenging scrambling peak. With the help of the guide all participants will take turns leading throughout the day. Depending upon which peak is being climbed, the guide may lead some steeper sections of rock climbing.
Optional Day 3 - For those who wish to learn more and experience a bigger climb, consider booking
a guided ascent on the Monday after the course. This is offered at a discounted rate for course participants. $400 + GST for 1 person, $50 + GST for each additional person. Maximum 4 people, must be booked in advance. See the[mountaineering] page for more information on guided ascents.
Gear List
All technical equipment is provided free of charge except for boots. However, if you have your own gear, feel free to use it! Rental and purchase information for boots, clothing, and camping gear can be found here. If you are unable to locate any of these items or have any questions, feel free to contact us at any time for assistance.
