The Grand Sentinal is one of the most unique rock climbs in the Canadian Rockies. Set in the spectacular Sentinal Pass area above Moraine Lake, this
free standing tower has some great climbing, awesome views, and a memorable summit! To access the tower, the world famous Sentinal Pass trail is
taken for about two hours. From the pass we descend a short ways to the base of the tower and the climb. There are two choices of climbs to
do on the tower. The normal route up the Grand Sentinal is four pitches of rock climbing up to 5.8 in difficulty, although it feels quite
steep and difficult for the grade. The other option is a bolted 5.10d route known as Cardiac Arete. Both climbs offer great climbing throughout
and standing on the tiny summit will not soon be forgotten!
Location: Lake Louise. 1 hour from Canmore, 1 hour from Golden, 2 hours from Calgary.
Length: 100m
Grade: 5.8 (normal route), or 5.10d (Cardiac Arete)
Logistics: Canmore, Banff, or Lake Louise are the best places to base out of for rock climbing in the Lake Louise area. The trails used
to access this climb may be closed at certain times during the summer.
